A news group of this sort does not sound bad. In fact it could serve as an interesting source of information regarding what problems new users of UNIX have and could influence the way software designers build new software. (It could also help vendors of UNIX, alot.) Further, I think that people should be assigned for various classes of questions that they and only they are responsible for answering. This might avoid having unreliable answers/information on the net as well as minimizing the amount of redundant answers also on the net. By the way, does anyone know where /etc/rc comes from, or what dsw means and really does, or why 0407 are magic numbers? What's an inode? Why is there core? Was that the name of a memory resident only graphics package?? aps.

How about splitting unix-info (or whatever the name) in geographically close groups? The questions asked are probably quite simple to answer, and in this way you'll get only a few answers, in stead of heaps of them, if you ask a simple question. By the way, it also reduces phone costs. Anyone has any objections? Jack Jansen, VU Amsterdam. ..{philabs|decvax}!mcvax!vu44!jack.
