Use 'dd' with the monster file as the input and some other file as the output. Specify the length to be copied using the 'count' option. To copy parts from the middle of the monster file use the 'skip' option in dd. 'Man' will give you more details. - Krishna ask@su-isl.arpa ask@su-dsn.arpa

On 4.1 bsd (and I assume 4.1c, 4.2) there is a utility called 'fold' which will insert carriage returns to split lines longer than <n> (user specifiable) characters long.
