Anybody know why I am not able to use extract_unbundled as root with a remote drive? I get the message: Enter media drive location [local | remote]: r Enter hostname of remote drive: beep Permission denied. /usr/etc/extract_unbundled : Problem with reaching remote host beep If not root, then I can get to the remote machine. The only problem is that I need to be root in order to run the install script for this product (SunLink DNI). Local machine is a 3/80, remote is a 3/60. Both running OS 4.0.3. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Greg Garland - Alive, occupying space, and exerting gravitational force Melbourne FL 32905. geg@beep.mis.semi.harris.com

Thanks for all the replies, but I guess I should have pointed out that the name of the local host _was_ in the remote machine's /.rhost file. (I RTFM, honest! :-)) Finally solved the problem by changing the /.rhost file to a '+', (Anybody want to log in? Too late, I've already changed it back). This gave me a small clue, and I found that putting the entire name of the local machine into the /.rhosts file allows access, i.e., 'ms3.mis.semi.harris.com' works but just 'ms3' doesn't. Why the remote machine has to have a different format from the others, I have no idea. In comp.sys.sun you write: >Anybody know why I am not able to use extract_unbundled as root with a >remote drive? ... > Permission denied. > /usr/etc/extract_unbundled : Problem with reaching remote host beep You need to be able to do a remote shell as root without a password. This requires that the remote host's /.rhost file contain the name of the host on which you are running extract_unbundled. David L. Markowitz Genisco Technology Corporation dav@gtc.com
