I'm having troubles with pty's on Sun 4 and Sun Sparc clients. When telnetd is searching for a good pty, it does some sort of ioctl on each device it tries until that ioctl fails. Then, that pty is assigned to the shell. xterm does not do the special ioctl, so even though it can open the slave side, the shell dies. I could not find reference to this special ioctl in the "tty" section of the Sun Reference Manual.
