[comp.sys.sun] SPARC hard drive problem

leclair@herky.cs.uiowa.edu (Jeanne Leclair) (06/05/91)

When the first SPARCs came out we had a problem with the Quantum drives
not spinning up after the machine was powered down. The error message
was something about unable to open sd... since the drive lost (in my
experience) was never the one with the root partition. The solution
was to hit the side of the SPARC to jar something stuck inside the drive.
(This worked for me a couple times and didn't work a couple times. When it
didn't work we had to swap out the drive.) Now I'm seeing SPARCs with one
drive only and a problem on power up. The error message this time is:

The SCSI bus is hung. Perhaps an external device is turned off.

The service folks are in the process of swapping out the 3rd drive
in a month or so. Is this the same problem but with a different error
message since it's on the root drive? (if so, I'll try hitting it again)

Are others seeing this problem with the 105 meg Quantum drive on SPARC 1s?

Thanks,
Jeanne
