[comp.sys.sun] NEED Format.dat data for Segate ST1239N SCSI drive

merlyn9@ihlpe.att.com (Michael T Sedwick) (06/05/91)

I have the following 3.5" half-height Segate drive, which unformatted
should be 239Mb, formatted 210Mb.

	Model: ST1239N SCSI disk
	        (old model # 94351-230 SWIFT)

Well going by the manufacturers specs below, I have errors in formatting this
drive properly.

	Cylinders: ...1268
	Heads ...9
	Sec/track ...36

When I key in these numbers... right away I see the following error repeated
several times:

'Block 399105 (1231/7/9), Fatal non-media error (illegal request)'

I see this again more times after format has run its course, or when trying to
label the disk.

Interestingly though, if I use 1231 as the total cylinder count, I can
format and label fine... but then I have a 186Mb formatted device. I don't want
to sacrifce that 24Mb of space...

Now I did call Segate, thinking they would know thier own products...
foolish me! I was left with the answers that the technicians only knew about
MSDOS (yuk tuie!). Some help calling the manufacturer does.

Well if anyone has worked with this drive before, or has the correct
format.dat information for this device PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I am getting
grey patches over this one. Actually any help would do at this point, Sun
was stumped on this also.

					thanks,
					   --mts
