[comp.sys.sun] Can we use blank margin around edges of video display?

I've got an SLC and there is about 1/2 inch of unused space all around the
edge of the CRT. On the back of the unit are controls for chaning the
width and height of the display. 

Would there be anything wrong with permanently leaving those set to the
widest and tallest settings that still give me a good picture? I'm
wondering if it's hard on the power supply or something. Why didn't the
unit come set to use more of the CRT?
