I have 4 different netorks of Sun workstations. Sun4, Sparcstations, Sun3, Sun386i and IPC. They all run SunOS 4.1.1. I am looking for a copy of TeX to install on these machines or at least on the Sun4, Sparcstation, & SLC. I ftp'd a copy from the uunet.uu.net network but everytime I try to uncompress or untar it I get either 'not in compress format' or 'Checksum error'. Can anybody please help. THanks in advance.

First, I don't know whether uunet's cache always has the latest version of TeX, though they appear to this time. To be safe, go directly to the source, labrea.stanford.edu:pub/tex/unix3.0/*, where you'll find the current patches for everything including the latest version of LaTeX (in pub/tex/latex/*). ...but everytime I try to uncompress or untar it I get either 'not in compress format' or 'Checksum error'. Second, be sure you say "type binary" after establishing the FTP connection but before "mget"ting any files. Then, say something like cat TeX3.0.tar.Za* | zcat | tar xvf -

I have received several replys about a problem I was having uncompressing and untarring the TeX3.0 from uunet.uu.net. I was getting the message, files are not in compressed format and checksum error. A lot of you replied that I must not have set binary mode while ftp'ing. But this mode was set. Some files uncompressed and untarred fine but others I just kept getting the error message I have since obtained the following copies: web2c version5.8a ics.uci.edu TeX version3.1 labrea.stanford.edu To untar TeX files: cat TeX3.1.tar.Za* | zcat | tar xvf - Thanks so much for all of your many replys. Sheila, Make sure you do the FTP's in binary mode. Defaulting to character will surely cause you great grief. | | Norm Crowfoot Voice: 716/422-2458 |\ | KBS Competency Center Internet: crowfoot@arisia.xerox.com | \ | Xerox Corp - MS: 0845-20C XNS: ncc:wbst845e:xerox | \| 780 Salt Road FAX: 716/422-2479 | | Webster, New York 14580 /|\ / | \
