Another item that can be damaged by AC leakage into the phone line is THE PHONE COMPANY LINEMAN (person?). It is not uncommon for linemen to touch uninsulated (live) telephone wires. At 48 volts DC you hardly notice it (except when the phone rings -- ouch!). If you think damaging the TELECO equipment might be expensive, try being sued after being convicted of manslaughter!.
