Back in 1980 we had direct dialling from the U.S. as well, but only to about seven cities. In late 1980 or early 1981 the USSR shut the whole world off, claiming they were upgrading their international exchange (which was known to be a falsehood). It was only in the summer of 1987 that direct service was reinaugurated from Western Europe. About 20 cities are diallable.
