[comp.dcom.telecom] Comment on "Vandalism / Union" Letter

eli@chipcom.com (09/11/89)

That posting from me regarding the NYNEX union 'twits' and vandalism
here in Massachusetts was not meant for publication! I didn't mention
this to Patrick specifically, so I apologize -- my mistake.

In the case of health benefits (the point that the strike centers on),
I think the union is in the wrong. Most other companies, including
those with IBEW employees, do require employee contributions to health
plans. I think that $4 per week is a reasonable donation. Of course,
one could argue that it will start at $4 per week and end up at $40
per week in some future contract.

I really don't want to get in a protracted debate about the strike.
As I said, my initial comments were meant to be private. Suffice to
say that I think the union is out of line in this case. It wouldn't
be the first time unions have hosed their members and the public...
Every silver lining has a touch of gray.
