A not totally trivial point is that the quake shook a lot of handsets off their receivers (or should that be the other way round?). Anyway, this can cut off phone service to a lot of residences and offices even without real physical damage, especially if you have a lot of phones and don't realize this has happened. Also, you can't use any of the phones 'til you get 'em all back on hook.
