[net.unix-wizards] lp device and xerox 2700

romig@osu-dbs.UUCP (11/10/83)

Can someone out there give me answers to the following questions:

(1) In the manual entry for the lp device (4.1 BSD, lp(4)), it claims
that 'lp' is a driver that copes with all standard DEC printer
interfaces, or something like that. Can someone tell me what
the 'standard' DEC printer interface is?

(2) We are attaching a Xerox 2700 laser printer to our Vax. We have
the option of using one of two interfaces:

	a. Dataproducts 2260 line printer interface
	b. Centronix line printer interface

Will lp deal with either of these? Which of these is same as/
compatible with the 'standard DEC interface'?

(3) If you have had experience dealing with Xerox 2700's on Vaxes
running 4.1 or 4.2 BSD, and think those comments would be
helpful for someone bringing up a x2700, would you please
    share them with us?

Thanks for listening, at least...

The 'standard' DEC line printer is a Data Products drum printer
of some variety that has practically no special features at all.
It's connected to a parallel interface card on a UNIBUS with the
following parameters:

	*CSR:	Address 0777514
		Bits:	0100000	Error
			   0200 Done
			   0100 Interrupt Enable

	BUF:	Address 0777516
		Bits: 0177	Data (7 bits)

	Interrupt vector: 0200

As you can see, there's nothing to it. By the way, the 'Data
Products Interface' is a de-facto standard for printers, as is
Centronics, and several manufacturers make boards that use it.

Note that there are two flavors of Dataproducts interfaces, the
'Vanilla', capable of going a "short" distance (100ft?), and the
'long-lines' flavor, capable of going a greater distance (1000ft?).

the Xerox 2700 uses the 'Vanilla' flavor dataproducts interface, so if you
desire a longer cable, count on spending about $500 on a box at the printer
end to convert between the cable and 2700.
