The most recent Area Codes list from Patrick showed 917 as (unused). For what it's worth, the newsletter enclosed in this month's New York Tel bill says they're proposing to give it to the Bronx (currently in 212) and also use it for all cellular phones and pagers now in 212. The article at one point says they want to meet "the growing demand for telecommunications devices SUCH AS cellular phones and pagers" [emphasis added], which sounds like maybe modems too, but that's the only mention -- I haven't seen the proposed tariff. If the PSC approves, 917 would open for business in 1992.
