I have seen that here the (electric and phone) cables are placed in tubes which are in the laid ground. This would make more sense, since a replacement would me more simple. Moreover, a plastic tape is wound on each cable with an identifier. What is the situation in the US? BTW in Italy main trunks are via microwave links (reason: mountains).
