[comp.dcom.telecom] Welcome to comp.dcom.telecom!

TELECOM Moderator <telecom@eecs.nwu.edu> (02/03/90)

         WELCOME TO COMP.DCOM.TELECOM AND THE <TELECOM DIGEST>
         =====================================================

This is a periodic posting to Usenet readers of comp.dcom.telecom, to
tell you a little about the group, and the procedures for posting here.

Comp.dcom.telecom is a moderated newsgroup. Unlike unmoderated groups,
messages in telecom and other moderated groups must first be mailed to
the moderator for review who will in turn post the message, or return
it to you with a reason why it cannot be used.

If you are using the most recent version of software to read and reply
to news at your site, then transmission of messages to the Moderator
of a moderated group is automatic, and nothing for you to worry about.

If using older software and you attempt to post a message direct to a
moderated group, it will be rejected by most sites and re-mailed to
the Moderator, causing the Moderator to receive many, many copies of
your message. Please do not do this!

Of course you may reply direct to the poster of any message, by
writing direct to that person's network address; but messages to the
newsgroup must be sent to 'telecom@eecs.nwu.edu' regardless of the
'from' or 'reply-to' address which might otherwise appear in the message.

'TELECOM Digest' and 'comp.dcom.telecom' are one and the same. The
former is the mailing-list version (and the original publication). The
latter is a message-by-message version undigested which is sent to
Usenet through the news gateway at accuvax.nwu.edu. Although you may
receive the messages in either format you please (just write and ask
for a mail subscription), for the sake of effeciency and to conserve
network resources, it is preferable that you read comp.dcom.telecom
when possible.

Every newsgroup on the net has a purpose: ours is to provide a
continuing discussion on subjects relating primarily to voice
telephony, and secondarily to other telecommunications topics.
Messages in the Digest/comp.dcom.telecom range from the highly
technical to comments and questions by 'average phone users'. No one
with telecom-related questions or comments is excluded from
participation. The group is not for the telecom experts, nor for the
novices, but rather, for *anyone* interested in learning about and
sharing their experiences relating to the telephone.

To protect the legal interests of the thousands of sites and the
several other networks which carry the newsgroup, we *do NOT* print
messages which include code numbers, formulas or schemes to defraud
telephone companies, or other messages which contain what might be
construed as 'illegal' or 'harassing' acts toward telephone companies,
or other voice/data networks, computer sites, etc. Please do not send
this type of message. It won't be printed and it won't be returned.

An 'auto-reply' message is generated at this site when messages are
received for the Digest. This is your assurance that your message was
received in the Moderator's mail, particularly since there is
sometimes a backlog and your message won't go out for a day or so.

In addition to distribution via Usenet as 'comp.dcom.telecom', the TELECOM
Digest is distributed to several Fidonet sites; to subscribers of
MCI Mail, AT&T Mail, and Compuserve (for private use in the subscriber's
email only); it is available on the Net Exchange BBS operated by
Telenet's PC Pursuit; it is distributed to Bitnet sites; and the New
York City Board of Education makes it available on NYCNET facilities.

Messages in TELECOM Digest/comp.dcom.telecom are distributed freely,
