From: Steve <byrne%TARTAN@CMU-CS-C.ARPA> Has anyone modified a public domain version of Gosling's EMACS (i.e. pre-Unipress) to work with 4.2BSD? steve -------

Gosling's EMACS was never public domain. For a while it was free, but even then there were distribution restrictions. (You had to tell him every time you got a copy for a new site.) The copyright notices have always been prominently displayed, so Gosling owned it both legally and morally. (Assuming you believe in the morality of owning your own ideas and creations.) If you already have the pre-Unipress version, I believe it is still acceptable to Unipress and Gosling if you want to trade fixes and enhancements, but you shouldn't be able to get copies for machines that aren't already running it. decvax!genrad!grkermit!chris allegra!linus!genrad!grkermit!chris harpo!eagle!mit-vax!grkermit!chris
