My best friend from college, a Kuwaiti, called me this evening. This is the first I have heard from him since the Iraqi invasion. He stood in line from 2 AM until 5 AM to place the call on one of the few available phones. It certainly felt good that I was the person who received his first call out of the country. And I'm sure glad I was home after he waited in line all that time! The quality of the connection was very good -- there was no more line noise than a domestic long distance call -- less noise than is typical for calls from Kuwait. Also absent was the short "chirp" I normally hear when picking up the receiver on an overseas call. This combined with the total lack of background noise really made it hard to believe I was really talking to Kuwait. As for how things are over there -- he said it's even worse than what we're seeing on CNN. John W. Temples -- john@jwt.UUCP (uunet!jwt!john)
