From: Howard Alt <alt@aids-unix>

Has anyone ever heard of the .start_up file? A friend tells me that
it exists on some version fo unix (they claim bsd, but I couldn't find
it.). Has anyone ever seen/used it? Is it system 5 thing?

			Thanks,
				Howard.

.start_up was a hack put into the v6 shell at Berkeley.
It was similar to, but not the same as, a .login or .profile
since it was executed by a separate shell forked from
login *before* the user's login shell was started.
It was mostly useful for setting up personal terminal
characteristics. So far as I know, .login/.profile
provide all of the same facilities in a better way.
