unix-request@cbosgd.att.com (The Moderator) (05/29/87)

This message marks the first in comp.unix. (Internally, I've started
a new volume.) There has been little activity, which may be either good
or bad, depending on how you look at things.

One of the reasons I started moderating this group was that I didn't have
the time to wade through everything in the two groups comp.unix.questions
and comp.unix.wizards (then under net. names). I still don't. But, I do
look at all the subject lines, and read (maybe) 2% of the articles in those
two groups. Now and then, I find one that I think is really interesting.
Sometimes, it's a question that could spark some interesting discussion.
Others, it's a well thought-out and presented answer. Several days ago,
I got a piece of mail suggesting that I post such articles in this group.
I think that's a pretty good idea. I don't know how often it will happen.
If the subject line doesn't turn me on, I won't even look at the article to
see that it is magnificent. I hope to find and provide a few gems, though.
I'll try to put a note at the beginning of each one, saying where I saw
it and why I found it noteworthy. Feel free to send follow-ups to any
article (including this new variety) for further posting.

One other thing. When you want to "reply" to the originator of a message
(the person in the From header line, who wrote the message), please be
sure to check the address you are using to make sure that your reply is
really going to the person you think it is. If your software uses the
"Path" header line instead of "From" or "Reply-To", then your reply will
be addressed to me. I will assume that any mail I get related to comp.unix
that looks like a follow-up is intended for the newsgroup unless there is
a clear indication that it is intended privately (like, it begins with
"Hi, Ron!" or something like that). If the message is not of general
interest, you'll get a note saying so. All the responses that do seem
to be of general interest will be summarized back to the net after there
seem to be a critical mass or about a week has gone by.

Yet another thing. I have a small list of people who are on a direct mail
distribution, who don't have access to Usenet. If you know of others,
I can handle a small number of additional direct mail recipients. I will
need a close approximation of the string I must use from uucp-land to
get mail to wherever the person is. (I can reach almost any uucp or
internet address using the comp.mail.maps information.)

Thanks!
