[comp.unix] GOOD unix backup for 3b2 [ANY -mod] tape

matt@inuxf.UUCP (Matt Verner) (12/17/87)

[The original message asks specifically about the AT&T 3B2. If there's
a general solution, that may be of even more interest. Thanks. -mod]

Could someone send me recommendations for a GOOD cartridge tape
backup system for a AT&T 3b2 running sysVr3? By good I mean
somthing that will automatically format tapes when necessary,
will NOT abort the backup when a bad verify is found, etc.
In other words something that is not brain-damaged and works
as advertised.

Please mail suggestions to:

In article <2954@mcdchg.UUCP> you write:

We market the SysAdmin product which includes backup and restore menus.
While it does not presently format floppies when not already formatted, it
could be easily made to do that (either by us as an enhancement, or by you
-- will deliver enough source to allow customization of the menu system)...
But, you want recommendations for a "cartridge tape" backup system... what
does formatting have to do with cartridge tapes?

Also, what do you mean not abort when a bad verify is found? What is a
"BAD verify" and HOW BAD is it?

AT&T markets SCSI peripherals, including 9-track tape drives and both
60M and 120M cartridge tape drives. Obviously, a serious $ outlay
for hardware (Host adapter, tape drive) and software (Extended Core
upgrade, Host adapter utilities, tape utilities), but well worth it
when you consider that you don't have to format the tape before using
it, and the speed is phenomenal (esp when compared to the standard
3B2/400 internal ESDI 23M tape drive).

Call you local AT&T sales rep.
