[net.music] VAN GOGH'S EAR

Caught up with an interesting band last weekend playing in the
Pigtown area of Baltimore. The group consists of a guitarist,
rolander synthist, e-bass and drums. The all-original songs
sound like a Talking Heads - B-52's hybrid. Unfortunately,
they played in basically a brick palace and the reverberation
was a problem. It was jarring at first but I found that by
closing my eyes I could clearly hear what they were saying,
in what configuration and where they were going. The guitar and
synthist are the rocks of the group and seem to be the
main composers. The rhythm holds on to their hats and are
very well rehearsed. I had heard the drummer before in a free-style
punker-instrumental band and he was awful at the ad lib.

Be that as it may, they are playing every Sat this month (God -
that's only one more) at the Cultured Pearl, Hollins St, Baltimore.
The CP is interesting in itself being H.L. Menckens watering
hole for years. They also have rows of books set up so if you
get bored you can always read - (I paged through Beautiful
San Diego and The Fishing Encyclopedia while my companion
blushed over a book of bawdy love poems). If you need directions
- send me a request by e-mail with a general description of where
you are geographically.

Please don't consider this an advertisement for either the
Cultured Pearl or VAN GOGH'S EAR since I have no personal connection
with either (though I sure would like to meet the cute synth player!)
