[comp.unix] Secure S/W Distribution

nigel@labtam.oz.au (Nigel Harwood) (01/04/90)

We are currently supporting a number of remote unix boxes with software updates
etc and would be interested in how other people are doing this sort of thing.

The thing which makes life a bit difficult is that we do not have
administrators at our remote sites just users.

At present we use streaming tape for major updates and these are loaded
by the senior user who uses a login/script setup.

Other updates which are required urgently are sent via UUCP.

The problem is that we need to remotely control all the files on the
unix box. This includes files which are only accessable by root etc.
(We don't want to change the permissions on these files)

The login/script setup used for tape updates executes under the root
user id (cannot be broken out of in any way).

For the UUCP updates we are stuck totally if we want access to a
file not accessable to uucp.

Suggestions ?
