[comp.unix] Help adding drives to SUN system ...

mro@salt.bellcore.com (Mike R. Ordun) (07/18/90)

This is an appeal for help. I am trying to add a pair of SCSI drives to
a SUN 3/160 and feel like I am beating my head against the wall. The
machine in question currently has 1 SCSI tape with controller, and a pair
of Maxtor drives with an Adaptec 4000 controller. I am trying to add a
shoebox that contains a pair of WREN V (moled # 94186-442) drives and a
Emulex MD21 controller (firmware version A98E). The system has been
succesfully configured so that format (running under SUN OS 4.0.1) sees
the drives and we can still boot from the original drives and use the tape.
The Emulex controller is terminated. The problem is that I cannot specify
a disk geometry to format that results in successful formating of the drives.
Logic dictates (a dangerous assumption) that the # of cylinders should be
1406, alternate cylinders 2, physical cylinders 1412, and heads 15.
Specifying this reuslts in a waring from format that it is using default
drive parameters and a second warning that format may not be correct. After
format it is unable to write the bad block list to the drive and gives a slew
of warnings about non media errors as it trys to write. Get the same behavior
when trying to use the drive as a 383H using format info from format.dat.

Is anyone using these dirves with the Emulex controller succesfully? Care
to share the secrets fo your success?
