[comp.unix] a different kind of editor...

metin@kaa.eng.ohio-state.edu (Demirci Metin) (10/10/90)

Hi folks,
We need to enter control characters into a file using some kind of
editor. We are wondering if there is an editor that would let us do that.
We think a Hex Editor would do it.

Is there any body who knows anything about these things?
we appreciate the help.

thank you,

I thought most editors had a way to do this.

GNU emacs has no problems with this, at least. You may enter any of
the 256 characters, anywhere. There is no line length limit either.
If you know what you are doing, you might even edit binary files.

There are also a few hex editors which run as GNU emacs modes.

I do not want to start a new cycle of religious war about editors.
When I was first presented emacs, I've been very reluctant to use it;
tired of learning two or three editors each time I was in contact with
a new machine or system, they were all more or less alike to me. But
emacs shifted my concept of editors to a new level, beyond my wildest
dreams (if we limit ourselves to computers, of course ;-). I do think
that if you overcome the initial emacs learning effort, you'll be
rewarded a lot afterwards.
