Much as I hate to point out a bug that helps me do well.... Step 1: Eat some food. Step 2: Read "Blech! Rotten Food!, etc, etc, etc" Step 3: Be very upset Step 4: Type "e" Step 5: Watch Nethack say "You finish eating the food ration. Yum!" or somesuch positive message. This is totally bogus. If the food is bad when you first eat it, it should always be bad.
