[rec.games.hack] Nethack 3.0j and Minix ST

david@doe.utoronto.ca (David Megginson) (06/06/91)

Does anyone have diffs and/or a binary for Nethack 3.0j under Minix ST?
I have tried compiling the sources on my 2-megabyte Mega 2. Under gcc,
I don't have enough memory to compile the long arrays of objects,
monsters, etc., and under c68, cv runs out of memory even when I
chmem to 14000000! Even if I do link it, I don't know that it will
run with my cludges (the pre-cv binary was 1.3 megs!!!).

Thank you for any help,

David "the Minix Moocher" Megginson

What about using the standard TOS (yes TOS!) nethack on a diskette and
ramdisk. Works fine and just as well as unix versions, and you don't have to
endure the harddisk noise :-)

Not a bad idea. However, I hate having to shut down Minix and reboot
my computer to use showdvi right now, and I'd hate to have to do it
for Nethack. Besides, I'd like to end up running Nethack on one screen
and my Real Work on another.

Use MiNT and run NetHack in one MGR window, and your "real" work
(what can be more real than NetHack :-) in another window. The TOS
version of nethack 3.0j is both MiNT and MGR friendly (surprise
surprise, considering who did the port :-).
