In an earlier posting I suggested using the G)et command to get
food from fields of crops in towns. This turns out to be a bad
idea--stealing from the peasants--and apparently can cost you a
level!
The best advice I've seen and tried for getting adequate food
includes:
1)Consider not having more than four characters, especially in
early stages of the game. This will reduce consumption.
2)Go out and night and kill lots of monsters (many carry food)
3)Shop around for food in various towns (in the Taverns type "r"
for rations when asked what you want). Prices apparently vary
from fairly expensive to outrageous.
There's also a spoiler (someone who will give free food), but
it's probably more fun to find that one for yourself. Even after
you find the person, the actual process for getting food is pretty
tedious.
