Beware of Activision's "Rampage"! It's apparently unstable in some way. I picked it up Tuesday night, took it home, and played with it for a while. I exited and restarted the program a few times, with no apparent ill effects. I played it enough to fill up one high-score listing. Then I exited the program, removed the disk from the drive, and powered down the machine. Last night (Wednesday), I wanted to play some more. So I booted DOS, put the disk in, and typed "rampage". And I got the message "Bad File Allocation Table." It kept on giving me this message, even when I rebooted the machine several times. Now I have to try to get a replacement. Does anybody know a phone number for Activision? Note: I was playing on an 8 MHz XT clone (100% compatible), and running the software directly from the 360k floppy that it came on. Good thing I wasn't playing from a hard disk, since it kills the FAT. Please send suggestions by E-mail. -- Pete Granger ...!{decvax,ulowell,ima,ism780c}!cg-atla!granger "Why do you always serve venison and fish on Valentine's day?" "Because I love you hart and sole."

I know it's kind of strange to follow up one's own posting, but I thought my further adventures with "Rampage" might be of interest. Fortunately, I didn't have to go back to Activision with my copy of the game. I took it back to the store where I bought it (Electronics Boutique) and explained the situation to the person working there. He took the disk and tried it in one of their demo machines, confirming my results. So he got me another copy. We tried that one before I left the store, and on three out of four tries, it displayed the title screen and then reported a parity error. Electronics Boutique cheerfully refunded my money, and I'm going to wait until a future release of the game. -- Pete Granger ...!{decvax,ulowell,ima,ism780c}!cg-atla!granger "Why do you always serve venison and fish on Valentine's day?"
