[net.news.group] Renaming net.columbia

I propose that this newsgroup be renamed net.challenger.

I second this proposal.

Maybe we should rename the news-group net.challenger, in memoriam?

HP is not responsible for anything I say here. In fact, what I say here
may have been generated by a noisy telephone line.

----------------

After all the previous discussion of the renaming of this newsgroup to
something else, I now suggest that this newsgroup be renamed
net.challenger in loving memory of those seven who met their tragic end
this the morning of January 28, 1986.

/* End various quotes from net.columbia. */

This sounds like an excellent idea to me. But instead of responding to
net.columbia, send all responces to net.news.group, since that is where
such proposals should be sent. Everyone out there who is interested
should respond. Don't take the attitude "Well, someone else will do it,
so I don't need to go to the trouble." The chances of this (renaming
the group) happening is directly proportional to the number of people
who request it.

This is to register my vote that net.columbia be renamed to
net.challenger in honor of the people who recently gave their
lives for all of us in order to further our understanding of
space and ourselves.

Foolish me, reading the news and trying to think at this hour
of the day. What I really mean is rename it net.challenger a very
worth while suggestion.

Not that I'm a uncaring or unfeeling person, but I personally would
rather see net.columbia renamed to net.space.shuttle. Once the
emotional intensity of last week's disaster subsides, net.challenger
would present the same challenge to novices to figure out what its
about as net.columbia.

Given that we've been trying to organize the net a bit in the past
year, net.space.shuttle makes a lot of sense.

And in order to avoid any more of this "that sounds like a great
idea" type of postings, I volunteer to accept your votes on the
subject. Please reply to me BY MAIL with one of the following:

	( ) Let's not rename net.columbia.

	( ) Let's rename net.columbia to net.challenger.

	( ) Let's rename net.columbia to net.space.shuttle.

	( ) Let's rename net.columbia to net.______________.

Another strong vote against. It is pointless to dwell on past failures.
We are all much better of to aim for future success.

Moreover, I feel the whole net would be better off if
	a) all debate on this topic were suspended for 30 days
	b) the 'underground'(?) net.challenger were removed.

If what is now "net.columbia" becomes "net.space.<columbia or challenger>"
will the existing gateway that feeds all "net.space" postings into the
ARPA "Space" mailing list also automatically pick up all the traffic in
"net.space.subgroup"? If so, then it would be a good thing to move the
space-shuttle group under the net.space umbrella, as it will maximize
information dissemination. If not, then little, if anything, is gained
by this single consolidation. In this latter case, it should be left
alone until the inevitable massive re-naming and revamping of all
USENET newsgroups.

Not necessarily so. You have the choice of doing whatever forwarding
you like, either just the main group, or any combination of groups.

Likewise. Keep as net.columbia.

Let us not be guilty of selective compassion. Over 200 servicemen died
while coming home to their families for Christmas. 8 people were killed
recently in an explosion in a shopping center in Mississippi. The former
volunteered for hazardous duty; the latter did not. Why focus on
Challenger people?

I am not unfeeling - but there are others who deserve compassion just as
much as the Challenger 7.
