[comp.sys.dec] 11/70 rsts woes

dave@uwmcsd1.UUCP (03/24/87)

A friend of mine who among other things maintains an 11/70 RSTS
system for the Milwaukee Public Schools, sent me this in the mail the
other day. Anything you have to say I will forward back to him. Back
in the good old days he used to nail me when I stole passwords when
people ran my editor under 6a, ah the good old days. Anyhow he writes:

Today, in preparation for dropping DEC as our service supplier, lost our
PDP-11/70 remote diagnostic console, giving us our old console with the
many blinking lights.

I was surprised, and disappointed, to see that the old Star Trek blinking
light pattern was gone. I had never seen our console when running V8.0.
I KNOW the lights are gone with V9.x, DEC even documents that. Our RUN
light is on almost constantly, even with ZERO activity, so I have a sinking
feeling we have a runaway peripheral scarfing up cycles, which may explain
our system sluggishness more than blaming it on CBE, etc. In all your
many DEC contacts, can you find out if an 11/70 running RSTS V8.0 should
show the Star Trek rotating light display during periods of idleness???

The DEC Field Service guy never saw an old 11/70 console running 8.0
either, so he is not of much help, but he has seen empty terminal cables
acting as antennas and screwing up the UNIBUS.
