I am trying to move a few executable files to a VAX, and having no joy whatsoever. This VAX is connected by modem only, and has no compilers. I want to compile a few programs and move them to the VAX. I have taken a VMS executable and copied it to the remote system. DUMP shows that the *contents* of the file are correct, but that the type is wrong. I then used BACKUP to create a dumpfile which I moved. The dumpfile contains the attributes and it's just data, right? No! The dump file also has to have magic attributes. The CONVERT command has a FDL option which allows the user to determine the attributes of the destination, obviously that would be the way to go, however, it is unable to read the "raw" data, but insists that it's "block serial lefthanded escape delimited," or some such nonsense. Another failure. I could just COPY over DECNET, but there is no connection, and won't be for political reasons. I could write a little program to do it, but I can't get the program to the remote machine, and it doesn't have any compilers, interpreters, or assemblers. Nothin'! If someone could give me a clue as to how I can take a four k file which has the right binary data but is not the right type, and get and VMS (v4.2) command to either change the record structure or just read the data in some raw mode and write it to the correct file type, I would be eternally grateful. I have asked the local gurus how to do it, but they have never had a problem like this, and are real glad it's not their problem. I can't believe that any operating system doesn't have a way to do something this simple. If posible reply to my signature, not point of origin. Post if you must, I try to catch up on newsgroups every few days. -- bill davidsen (wedu@ge-crd.arpa) {chinet | philabs | sesimo}!steinmetz!crdos1!davidsen "Stupidity, like virtue, is its own reward" ibue
