Someone down the hall from me needs help connecting some Hayes-compatible modems to his Ultrix MicroVax for UUCP and dialins. I looked through his manuals and it looks like a simple procedure, with one exception -- looks like Ultrix doesn't support non-DEC modems. This seems unlikely -- my theory was that one of the DEC modems uucpsetup seems to know about is probably a Hayes-compatible, and all I have to do is to find out the DEC part number which corresponds to "Hayes-compatible" and everything will be fine. Unfortunately, he has no idea what kind of modems DEC has and seems to be having trouble getting any support from DEC for his uVax. Can anybody help? What do I tell uucpsetup to make it work with a Hayes-compatible? (It's a uVax II running Ultrix 2.0-1, if that makes any difference. I haven't seen the modems but they're probably USR Courier 2400's -- any comments regarding problems installing 2400 baud modems might also be helpful, though I suspect he'd be happy with 1200 baud for a while.) Thanks in advance -- any help would be much appreciated. .. ...Akkana Center for Nonlinear Studies, LANL akkana%infidel@lanl.gov hp@lanl.gov ihnp4!lanl!hp "I think I'll take a walk. There is a file in /etc called acucap. This file contains the entries for all valid acu's. It looks like it understands hayes and ventel as well as all the dec modems. If nothing else, you can put your own entry here. Joe Greer ...{ihnp4,ucbvax,rutgers}!pur-ee!mdbs!joe

I tried mailing this reply but it got bounced all the way from cbosgd!moss!ptsfa!beta with the message "Forwarding to this system disallowed". So here's a posting to waste everyone's bandwidth. BTW, I've noticed that the vn interface doesn't allow you to specify a distribution, so I guess this goes worldwide. Too bad. We won't migrate to 2.0 for a couple of weeks yet, but Ultrix 1.2 on our VAX 750 has an /etc/acucap file in which automatic call units (or dial out modems when they are integrated) are described. I believe the distributed acucap with 1.2 had an entry for Hayes. Tip and UUCP both use the acucap under Ultrix 1.2. I've pretty much ignored the uucpsetup scripts, as well as most of the other system administration scripts on all of our machines; at the most I use the scripts to set up a template of what I want, and then I hand edit the files in question to get what I really need. Anyway, I've included some of our acucap for your entertainment and delight. We've been using this acucap for months with no trouble. You had better have modem control enabled on the serial lines in question and the proper cables installed, because the generic dialing code looks for DTR rising and falling, so you'll get poor results if DTR is tied high or low or left hanging. hayes|h1200|smartmodem|Hayes smartmodem 1200 (touch tone):\ :ls:cr:hu:re:rs=,:\ :fd#60:\ :sd#500000:ss=+++ATZ\r:sr=OK:\ :dd#100000:di=ATF1L3TD:dt=\r:\ :os=CONNECT: mt224n|Multitech MT224ER modem in non-MNP mode:\ :ls:cr:hu:re:rs=,:\ :fd#60:\ :sd#500000:ss=+++ATZ\r:sr=OK:\ :dd#100000:di=AT&E0&E10X0M1F1L3TD:dt=\r:\ :os=CONNECT: microcom|m2400|Microcom SX2400 modem in non-MNP mode:\ :ls:cr:hu:re:rs=,:\ :fd#180:sd#500000:dd#500000:\ :ss=INIT\rY\r\r\r\r\r:\ :sr=ARE YOU SURE? Take a look at /usr/lib/uucp/L-devices (this is, I believe, just like it comes from DEC): ####################### # Sample entries: # #ACU ttyd0 ttyd0 1200 DF03 #ACU ttyd1 ttyd1 300 DF02 #ACU ttyd2 ttyd2 1200 hayes #ACU ttyd3 ttyd3 1200 ventel #DIR tty04 tty04 9600 direct Note ttyd2. We're using a hayes Smartmodem with no problems. I don't know how to convince uucpsetup to do this, however. I did my uucp set up by hand. -- Patrick Peters UUCP: ut-sally!im4u!ti-csl!tifsie!pat Texas Instruments sun!texsun!ti-csl!tifsie!pat PO Box 655012 M/S 3635 uiucdcs!convex!smu!tifsie!pat Dallas, TX 75265 Voice: (214)995-2786
