[comp.sys.dec] VAX 11/730

robertl@killer.UUCP (Robert Lord) (08/19/87)

Would someone mind giving me some information on a DEC VAX 11/730? Like
how big it is, how much power, could I run it at home or is it a monster?
Also, what sort of sortware is availible (OS's I mean) and how many users
can it handle?

     Thanks,
         Robert

Also, do they make these anymore? When did they start making them (and if
they aren't make anymore, when did they stop?)

As an PAINFULLY EXPERIENCED 11/730 user....

The 730 physically is about 15" high in a standard DEC (deep) cabinet.
It fits in nicely with an R80 (150Mb) and Rl02 drives, giving a full
cabinet.

VMS and (I believe) BSD run on it, as with most conventional Vaxen.

I find it useful as a stand-alone single user machine. For the money,
it is slow, very power hungry and noisy. Given the choice between the
730 and a small workstation (Sun 3/50, Vaxstation X), I'd take the
workstation every single time.

Cheers,
Tony ;-)

The 730 is an old and EXTREMELY S-L-O-W VAX -- it runs either VMS or
Ultrix. It can barely support one user. On compute-bound benchmarks
my DEC Rainbow (8088-based) outruns it. We have one at work -- it's
sitting in the closet gathering dust.

A 730 is about the size of a large dishwasher, consumes quite a lot of power,
and has noisy fans. You'd be much better off buying an AT clone. You could
buy one every other month with the maintenance charges on a 730.
