Does anyone know if it is possible to easiliy, cheaply (if you already have a VAX), and transparently use a MicroVAX as a file server for an IBM PC running MS-DOS using a normal serial port hardwire connection? Forgive me if this is a stupid question. If it is, I would like to be given some additional suggestions on how to use a MicroVAX as a file server. <Bakcbones>!{pur-ee,iuvax}!bsu-cs!mithomas Michael Niehaus

The obvious way would be to buy DECnet-DOS for the PCs and to install
VAX/VMS Services for MS-DOS (aka PCFS, aka SMB server) on the VAX.
Although performance wouldn't be wonderful -- you really need an
Ethernet link for decent performance -- it is quite transparent and
reliable.
