[net.unix-wizards] magtape: RSTS -> BSD UNIX?

minow@decvax.UUCP (Martin Minow) (02/15/84)

The RSTS/E backup format is highly compressed, with long block
lengths. Also, filenames are encoded in an internal format.
Your best bet is to dump the tape on a RSTS system and copy
the files, using PIP, to an ANSI or DOS tape. These are
relatively easy to read on Unix.

I have a magtape, 600 foot, with files created by PDP-11/34 RSTS/E V7
BACKUP utility. I would like to put those files on to a VAX-11/780
BSD 4.1c UNIX. I tried dd(1) and failed. Any ideas?
