[comp.sys.dec] Optical Disk/Dec3100 Question

spirit@uxe.cso.uiuc.edu (03/22/89)

Hello,

Does anybody have any information on ERASEABLE OPTICAL DISK
DRIVES, more specifically for using with a Decstation 3100?
I suppose we could hook it to our uVAX but the real application
will be with the 3100.

Similarly, does anyone out there have a multiple 3100 configuration
up? Would love to have some advice on building a small 3100
network setup.

			Thanks in advance,

I strongly second this inquiry. I would like to buy a workstation with a DEC
MIPS processor and the NeXt I/O handling. I don't understand why I should be
satisfied with NeXt's flp power of 1/5 of DEC's, or a DEC peripheral of 332MB
24ms non-removable disk for $6000 (marketprices of faster SCSI harddisks are
about $2000).

If you have experience with either hooking up non-DEC harddisks or optical
floppies, please let me (and other readers here) know the specifics. Does one
need special drivers? Software knowledge? Hardware knowledge? Can you recommend
specific (optical) drives?

I also am considering buying some 3100s. I would appreciate any
information on third-party disk drives AND tape drives. DEC's price
for the TK50Z and the extension box for the 3100 is $5415 !
