I am trying to connect a Micropolis 1578-15 disk drive to a DECstation3100. At boot time, the 3100 recognizes the drive as an RZ55. I used the rzdisk program to format the drive using the vendor defects and the default parameters from the disk drive. I am able to put a file system on, but I get strange behavior when I access the drive. When I copy a directory of files (/usr/ucb) on the drive to a different name on the same drive then do a diff -r. Some of the files have errors. ex. the 128 block on dbx is in error in the copy. I think the problem has something to do with the disk drive parameters, but I am not sure. Can anyone help me? -Joe Othmer att!vax135!jo (201)-949-6975 -- Joe Othmer AT&T Bell Labs, Holmdel, NJ 07733 Rm. 4E-511, (201) 949-26975 vax135!jo

I've spent the last month fighting the exact same problem. I could copy a file (vmunix was my primary example,) compare them, and find I had two different files! Well I now believe we've conquered the problem. After discussions with Micropolis it seems that some of the drives they ship don't come with the current ROMs. The drives I have now work reliably (and have been doing so for a whole week of brutal testing.) To summarize, the drives I have right now are ROM Version 19V0 (rzdisk -i <raw-device> gives you this info, as does test -c in the ROM monitor.)
