I went to the DEC roadshow here in Tulsa where they trotted out the new PVAX and MIPS-based RISC workstations. I was prepared for a mildly interesting presentation and planned to maintain my cool when the regional sales manager, during his 'kickoff the meeting' schpiel, said: "In today's heterogenous computing environment, the network is the system..." Well, I *did* manage to maintain composure, but just barely. :-}

The slogan The Network is the System was first used by Digital as the theme of a DECUS Symposium about 3 years ago. A few months later another computer company started using a similar slogan -- and trademarked it to boot! -- I *did* manage to maintain my composure, but just barely :-) :-) :-)

The Network is the System, but don't try to run anything other than Vaxes running VMS. They do have TCP/IP, although it has some silly name like Ultrix Connection or something. [...various ramblings about "The Network is the System...", etc...] I hope this hasn't been mentioned before... I hate repeating rumors... ;-) Another internal motto rumored to be floating around Digital's PC group is (as told to me through reliable sources): Q: "What about PCs?" A: "Digital Finally Has It Now! ... But, it's made by someone else..." It's a shame... really! I am sure that being a Tandy reseller irks these guys and gals to no end. DEC really made some wonderful pieces of hard- ware. Oh well... Alan -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Mail: Alan I.
