A local businessman has recently upgraded his in-house system to a microvax and has offered to "sell" me his old, but functional, PDP 11/23 for scrap value. Now by scrap value, I'm talking under $500, so at least I know that it will cost me no more than that. However, I recently let my subscriptions to the DEC related trade rags slide and I find myself without any means of contacting any of the resellers/buyers of DEC equipment who might have been able to give me an idea of what the worth of the system is. I'd be interested in hearing from someone who can give me an idea, forget the drives etc, just the cpu. Or who can put me in contact with one or more buyers. Finally, he is erasing the OS (RT11, I believe) as he says that DEC said he couldn't give it to me. And ethically, if that is indeed the case, I wouldn't feel right about asking for it "under the table". So, my final query is, does anyone know of a PD Unix/look-alike or inexpensive commercial version for the system, or does someone have a copy they can sell/donate. BTW, the system has two RL02's and two rodime HD's in an external expansion box. I'd also be interested in your opinions concerning the usefullness (non-commercial) of this box as well the feasibility of upgrading it, etc. To save bandwidth, please reply via e-mail. Many thanks!
