I would like some information regarding the DS3100 that I have had difficulty obtaining from the product literature. In the hopes that someone with one may be able to answer, I am querying the collected wisdom of this newsgroup. 1. Serial ports: what types of devices are supported? Are there printer drivers for non-DEC printers such as LaserWriters? other PostScript printers? What communications capabilities are available? Can one of the serial ports be used to dial into the DS3100? 2. SCSI port: what types of devices are supported? Are there drivers for non-DEC disks and tapes? What about printers with SCSI interfaces? 3. Memory: what is a useful configuration of memory, especially given that DECwindows seems to hog memory? What non-DEC memory is available? 4. Compilers and software: what compilers are available beyond C? How bug-free are they? How well does `gcc' perform on the DS3100? What about other `gnu-ware'? What about TeX and associates? 5. Remote logins: are concurrent remote logins via telnet or rlogin limited? If so, how many other users can be logged on simultaneously? 6. DS3100 vs. Sun 4 workstations: does anyone have experience with both machines? If so, how do they compare in performance, ease of administration, documentation, support, etc? I have gleaned partial answers to some of these questions from this group. I hope you can fill in the gaps. Please respond via email and I will summarize. Thanks for your help. -- ==================================================================== Brook G.
