[comp.sys.dec] Multi-user DS3100 -- is it crazy?

bruce@trigraph.uucp (Bruce Freeman) (06/23/89)

What is the current feeling on how a DS3100 would perform as a multi-user
machine? For example suppose one had a 3100S and connected to it using LAT
terminal servers. How would 32 users on this machine compare with the more
traditional 32 user MicroVAX 3XXX? The 3100 obviously has more raw CPU power
but what about I/O and disk bandwidth?

My gut feeling is that the 3100 is better off as a single user workstation
or compute/file server than as a multi-user timesharing system. However I
have not seen any articles giving hard facts on this subject and our local
DEC VAR has barely heard of the DS3100 (it doesn't run VMS after all).

Anybody else got the same questions or better yet answers?

An intergrated 32-user Ultrix workload shows the DS3100 to faster
than any of the following:

MicroVAX II
VAX 3400
VAX 3600
VAX 3800
VAX 6210
