I'm trying to get some clearer idea of what kind of performance to expect using a VAXserver-3500 to serve a group (12-15) DECStation-2100's (each with 8M) in a graphics/CAD sort of environment. Note that it is an educational sort of setting, so it isn't quite the same as having 12-15 CAD engineers banging away 8hr a day. But what I'd like to get some idea of is: 1) is it totally ridiculous? 2) is it going to be only marginally painful, somewhat ok, etc? I don't have much experience with Ultrix workstations, only with VMS and LAVC based stuff. Any insight folks could give me would be good. Also, the configuration of the 3500 is as follows: 16M memory DELQA ethernet KDA50 disk controller RA70 2 SI83C (these are fujitsu drives, hacked up to act like RA82's. 16ms access time though) The net these things would be on is unloaded (ie, just these machines and a couple of standalone systems, which generate virtually no traffic). We would be adding a SCSI controller + a few CDC Wren V's to the 3500 to boost the available disk space (for a total of around 2.5Gig). Also, how much bigger are the binaries for Risc/Ultrix machines? thanks alot. -- Art Stine Sr Network Engineer Clarkson U ABStine@CLVMS.Clarkson.Edu
