We are planning to buy a tape subsystem for a VAX-3200 (Q-bus, VMS). The principlw use of the system would be unattended backups of about 1.3GB of disks on a 3 node cluster. We also want to use it to off-load astronomical data and images with typical sizes of perhaps 50-150 MB. The VHS and 8mm systems that are now popular seem almost as bad as our TK50 in terms of access speed. An attractive new technology is the DAT (digital audio tape) storage device, which has a capacity of 1.2GB on a single tape, DU emulation, and `random' access times of 20 sec. In the 3 April 89 Digital News has a review of Gigatrend's model 1230 system. I wonder if anyone on the net has any experience with this unit or a similar DAT? Robert Mutel
