[comp.sys.dec] Remote backups, queues, load balancing, and such.

carlos@tybalt.caltech.edu (Carlos Salinas) (08/14/89)

Background: 5 Microvax IIs: 1 running VMS5.1-1, 3 running VMS5.1, 1 VMS4.7
with a 9 track tape drive. Me be manager.

Remote backups: Is there some way that users can back up to a remote tape
drive in an unclustered system? The problem is mounting a remote device.
DFS mentions something about "mounting access points" could I use that?
I've also considered setting up network objects which mount the tape drive
via a com file. Would that work?

Remote queues and load balancing: Can a generic queue be used to load-balance
batch jobs on several machines? ie send to execution queues based on the load
at the remote node on which the execution queue exists?

And such...: Info on Cluster VS the trio: DNS, DFS, RSM. Performance, ease of
maintenance, pros and cons, etc..

Thanxs in advance!
