[comp.sys.dec] VAXstation 3520 SCSI compatibility

jvb7u@astsun1.astro.Virginia.EDU (Jon Brinkmann) (08/15/89)

I am considering the purchase of a VAXstation 3520 workstation. This model
uses a dual CVAX processor card with an on-card SCSI port. DEC says that
this port uses synchronous SCSI (as opposed to the 3100's asynchronous port).
However, no one at Tech Support will tell me if I can use third party devices
with the 3520. In addition, the vendors have no idea whether their devices
(a CDC Sabre disk drive and Kennedy 9612 tape drive) will work with the 3520.
The best answer I've gotten is that 'it works on the 3100'.

Does anyone out there know if these devices will work (well?) on the 3520?
What SCSI chip does the 3520 use?

Jon,
The 3520 SCSI is synchronous SCSI, as is the DECstation 3100. In fact,
they use the same SCSI chip (a Digital proprietary chip). The
VAXstation 3100 is asynchronous SCSI and uses a different chip. The
tech support people can not keep track of the third party peripherals'
status on our SCSI; at least not yet.

The VAXstation 3520 and 3540 use the SAME SCSI chip as the one in
the risc based DECstation 3100.
