I'm trying to run motif on a VMS workstation. That is I want to run mwm off a Ultrix machine, so that it controls the windows on a VMS system. Both the VMS system and the ULTRIX system have decnet. To run the system we have tried: 1) change protection on the VMS system to *::* under the session manager. 2) set host to the ULTRIX machine. 3) setenv DISPLAY to <nodename>::0.0 4) /usr/bin/X11/mwm This results in the "X Toolkit Error: Can't Open display" message. Can anyone help solve this problem? Thanks in advance. Bruce.

You must tell the server that the host that the client is running on is allowed to access the display. On Unix (Ultrix) systems the name of the command to do this is "xhost +<nodename>". On VMS, who knows? regards, fletcher Fletcher E. Kittredge fkittred@bbn.com

You might want to try setting the protrection on the VMS system to machine_name::ultrix-uid-number For example, my machine is "croton", and my uid is "frank" (which is 268 on croton). I would use croton::268 This has worked for me in the past. Regards, Frank

I have tried to do exactly what you do - i.e. usink my DECstation 3100 as a client running "mwm" for my VAXstation 3100. I am using DECs UCX/TCP-IP as a transport, so I may have a different set of problems. But at any rate, the networked mwm behavior is farr less than impressive (in particular for any rubber-banding operations, such as window resize - though I may be spoiled by DS3100). In addition, mwm keeps cleanly exiting - so far I haven't been able to find out why (what events sequence is a trigger). [I'd just LOVE to have Motif working on VMS, even though it won't cure its slow startup] Regarding connection problems: Try something simple first, such as running xclock - this is a fair display connection test (you don't have to live without WM on VAXstation), and only after you have a reliable display connection, go to uwm. If the connection is NOT the problem, have you visitied .Xdefaults and .mwmrc ? You will have to move some of the resources into your VAX setup - VMS DECwindows SessionManager loads your DECwindows preferences into X server's RESOURCE_MANAGER property, which overrides any application-specific class/user defaults from your Ultrix client. -- ############################################################################### Martin Brunecky, Auto-trol Technology Corporation, 12500 North Washington Street, Denver, CO-80241-2404 (303) 252-2499 ncar!ico!auto-trol!marbru
