[comp.sys.dec] Configuring a workstation lab with X-window terminals.

dan@lclark.UUCP (Dan Revel) (09/20/89)

We are considering a classroom/research workstation facility
to support

a) upper-level undergraduate computer courses in graphics,
    object-oriented programming (Smalltalk, maybe C++),
    operating systems, simulation, etc.

b) individual faculty/student projects involving in some
    cases number crunching (probably FORTRAN) and in some
    cases applications with critical data retrieval requirements.

One possibility we are considering is three DECstation 3100's
plus a DS3100 file server and four or so X-window terminals.
The intention is to get the functionality of seven workstations
at a reasonable cost.

Does anyone know what price we will pay, in terms of functionality,
by using the X-terminals, as opposed to having every keyboard be a
DS3100 (or given budget constraints some lower priced workstation)?

Any other useful observations about: DS3100's, X-terminals, and
workstation labs would be appreciated as well.

Thanks,
