[comp.sys.dec] Best kernal parameters to turn for a diskless node server?

icsu6000@caesar.cs.montana.edu (Jaye Mathisen) (10/26/89)

I have a mVAX II running Ultrix 3.0 as a boot node, and 2 mVAX 2000's,
and 2 VAXStation 2000's booted diskless off of it.

the mVAX is only going to be a server, no user logins. It will handle
news, mail, etc.

Has anybody played around with what's a "good" set of paramters to configure
the kernel to? Since I want the mVAX to use as much real memory as possible
for buffers, should I crank up the MAXUSERS stuff? what about the per-user
process stuff? Should it be high numbers or low? Are there some undocumented
things I should set? What about nfsd's? The manual suggests two, I've tried
4, and can't really tell a difference, other than the load average on the
mVAX goes up.

I've played with some of the stuff, but I think it's a fairly subjective
thing. I suppose I could get MUSBUS from comp.sources.unix, and try
various parameters, and such, but I hope somebody else has done this.

Mail responses to:

and I'll summarize and post if there is enough interest.

Thanx in advance for any info or light you can shed.
