[comp.sys.dec] INCA release date question

brodie@fps.mcw.edu (02/13/90)

At the last DECUS symposium, I was party to a small demo of what
was (then) called 'INCA', which was a system that DEC has set up for
sites with RSC boxex to be able to log calls and also search the DSIN
database all from your LOCAL site. You do things like send a message
to INCA%xxxxx% and your field service call is automatically logged, and
you get a response inside of two minutes with a log# (on your mail file).

Now for the question.... does ANYONE know when this is supposed to be
released for the general user community? We were told at the time that
it would be availbale "1st quarter" to all current VAXSIM users with an
RSC box. (i.e., most of us..)

anyone heard rumors of release times?

My understanding is that INCA was recently renamed to DSNlink when
it came out of beta. It should be available Real Soon Now, if not
Right Now.

We were a beta site, and found this service very valuable.

It was not my impression that one needed VAXSIM, only a modem. Can anyone
comment? This is important since we are currenly a third party maitenance
site.

Our feelings exactly... it gets rid of the game of telephone tag that usually
occurs when working with Colorado. Plus it makes DSIN type inquiries a lot
easier..

well, the "rules" were not real clear (or even known) at the time.
I think you just had to be under dec maintenance (i.e, need an "access number"
for colorado/atlanta), and a modem. Integration with vaxsim is a future
possibility.

(think about it, VAXSIM sees a bunch of disk errors, hooks into DSNlink
(or whatever it's called now), tells colorado about the disk errors and
a specialist is notified about it and checks out your system, all while
you're asleep....!)

All current VAXSIM users is supposed to be one to one with all current
FS customers. I asked a managed at Colorado yesterday (during a
periodic where are my problem reports disappearing conference) and he
said that the mailing was going out within two weeks.
